Stoney Cove 11-12 February 2012

Keep your skills silky smooth this winter with a check out dive weekend at Stoney Cove, the UK’s National Diving Centre in Leicestershire www.stoneycove.com. It'll be a bit nippy, but your drysuit will keep you warm as toast as you explore the hidden delights of this amazing underwater adventure park. This is an recreational inland dive trip for 12 divers on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February 2012.

Quarrying first began in Stoney Stanton at the beginning of the 19th Century, granite excavated from the site was used in the construction of roads and buildings throughout the region until the quarry closed in 1958. Today, Stoney Cove offers depths from 7m to 36m, with a fabulous range of wrecks and structures that include the Stanegarth boat (ideal for practicing wreck penetration), Defiant tug boat, the trawler MV Belinda, the Nautilus submarine, a Viscount aircraft cockpit, a Wessex helicopter (a nice little swin through), the hydrobox at 36M (a good opportunity to deep dive on Sunday morning), archways beneath the pub and various block houses, to name a few http://www.stoneycove.com/beneath.htm. Out of the water, facilities include toilets, showers, snack bar, Nemo's Bar & restaurant, UnderwaterWorld (the dive shop), and a gas station that supplies air, Nitrox and O2 fills. Stoney Cove is open 7 am to 4 pm in February.

Accommodation. We're staying at the Dive Inn, a comfortable and inexpensive B&B in Stoney Stanton, just two minutes drive from Stoney Cove on Friday 10 & Saturday 11 February, the Dive Inn serves an awesome full-English brerakfast, so you'll be set up for the day. I thought we could go to the Taj, a good curry house the other end of the village and stop off at a couple of pubs along the way - so that's dinner sorted on Saturday night.

Diver training. Stoney Cove is an ideal location to improve your dive skills in preparation for the season ahead. PADI training courses with a Dive Wimbledon instructor are available on this trip, including Advanced Open Water Diver, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Enriched Air Diver, Drysuit Diver, Underwater Navigation and the Rescue course.
